Pitching In for the Pierogis

It’s probably not something Edward R Murrow or Walter Cronkite would have done, but it was still a lot of fun. The foursome that makes up the morning studio team for “Channel 4 Action News This Morning” got out from behind the desk – and went into costume – for the Great Pierogi Race.

The between-inning event at PNC Park has become a fan favorite — with people often betting on the outcome of this “race”. Thanks to some behind-the-scenes discussion, Kelly, Demetrius, Melanie and myself played the roles of Cheese Chester, Jalapeno Hanna, Sauerkraut Saul and Oliver Onion — and raced at the end of the 5th inning.

As you can see from these photos, there’s some work that happens behind the scenes before the race. We have to wear a black leotard as well as very large shoes and large white-gloved hands. Kelly clearly loved her role as Jalapeno Hanna and I think it was because of her very big purse.

The hardest part of the day was once we were in costume. Sure the outfits were very hot and
we each probably lost 5 pounds just standing inside them, but it was even harder not saying a word. Once we were in costume, we had to assume the role and keep the magic for the younger kids which means not saying a word and letting anyone know who we were. It became obvious once the children came up to us before the race looking for hugs and high fives.

As for the main event — Chester and Oliver ( Demetrius and myself ) got out a quick lead before we were taken out by the Pirate Parrot. Hanna ( Kelly ) could have won the race but instead came to our defense by bashing the parrot with her handbag. That left the door wide open for Saul ( Melanie ) to win the race.

The shot at the end says it all. We were both exhausted and excited. It’s something I’m sure we will never forget and something that brings the four of us closer together. Call it a team building activity. Also, kudos to Kelly’s husband, Jason, for taking all the photos.
